For "to give color to the complexion of a youthful face", says Cennini, we start, as background color, with the verdaccio:

"Take away as much as a dark ochre bean... put it in the so-called your little vase, and remove a little of black, as much as a lens; mix it with the ochre. Take a little of Sangiovanni white, as much as a third bean; remove as much as a tip of a little knife of light cinnabar red; mix it with the foretold colors all together...and paint with your brush, almost dry, little by little, with this color, which is called verdaccio in Florence."

Basically, the verdaccio is a mixture of ochre, white, black and a hint of cinnabar, which is a red earth.
